I've been asked by people, quite often, what my culture shocks were when I first came to the states.
This is a pretty tricky question for me because I knew a lot of things about American culture already and was prepared to face them.
Some international students have a hard time adjusting to American culture and I've seen those who left in a couple of weeks after they arrived.
Why am I still here? Was it easy for me??
No flipping way!!
Of course I experienced so many things that almost made me cry and embarrassed me, which could be a culture shock in some way I guess.
But it's just something we all face at least once in our life time wherever we go right? Saying something dumb or what so ever.
The point is, how to perceive these things and get through such hard times.
I can be emotional very easily and feeling up and down.
How I cope with it?
Laugh at myself and forget them as soon as possible.
Life is too short to be so sensitive all the time!
Anyway, lately I thought about culture shocks again and remembered one thing that still bugs me...that is.....(drum roll)........eating eggs, bacon, and sausages with SYRUP!!
When I first saw some students doing this at cafeteria my heart was almost, wait it really did stopped!!!
I never saw people doing this in Japan...have you? anyone who's been to Japan?
Some of my American friends don't like it either but still it seems to be acceptable here.
Differences of the both cultures do not necessarily surprise me yet this is one of my biggest pet peeves so far.
